Jeffrey Esmond Toastmasters Speech Entertaining Speaker #5 August 12, 2002 LIVING WITH LOSING Do we have any new guests today? Yes we do, another loser among us. Welcome! You may think this is a joke but it’s not. We are a group of people who come together because we believe that we do not have to win at everything. We do not have to compete at everything and come out on top. Because a true winner builds himself on the inside by learning to Live with Losing. That is why our monthly after dinner speech always keeps the topic, Living with Losing. Has anyone lost anything this week? Are you a bigger person because of it? If not, have some more cheesecake. I volunteered to speak tonite to relate to you a new experience of mine. I have a new achievement! A few weeks ago, I participated in the Aloha State Games! Because I’ve been swimming for two years, my coach and teammates urged me to participate in the Aloha State Games as my first swim meet. I thought, how can I do that, there’s no way I can win. But then of course I remembered my long time membership in this club and I realized it doesn’t matter if I win, all that matters is that I participate and do something new and challenging. So finally the day of the Aloha State Games arrived. I woke up super early because I had to be from Kahaluu to UH by 7:30. I drank a little bit of coffee, though not enough to really wake me up.
